It's worse than you think man. SJWs complained to Apple about their emoji font not being diverse enough, so they added all of this multicultural variation shit for each glyph, with like 16 shades of skin color for each smiley face controlled by a variation selector prefix codepoint.

It's a fucking nightmare. I had to deal with this shit at work. And since they're colored glyphs, it fucks up your usual algorithms for LCD sub-sampled rendering you typically use, so you've got to add these separate codepaths just for caching the glyphs in textures, and so on and so forth.

Most of the emoji are above the Basic Multilingual Plane (have codepoints requiring more than 16-bits). So if you force your programs to only accept BMP code planes or UCS-2 characters, force FreeType into UCS-2 mode, etc. you can stop emoji from infecting your program.

From the symbol of Mercury (U+263F ☿). This symbol is used to indicate a virgin female (for example, in genetic analysis). Also used in botany to indicate flower with both male and female reproductive organs. The Mercury symbol has also been increasingly claimed by non-binary transgender people for their use, being a gender symbol available in Unicode on most computers.
From the female and male symbols (U+26A5 ⚥). Intersex or transgender.
Another transgender symbol, a combination of the male and female sign with a third, combined arm representing non-binary transgender people (Unicode: U+26A7 ⚧).
⚢ (U+26A2): Double female sign, sometimes used as a female homosexual symbol
⚣ (U+26A3): Double male sign, sometimes used as a male homosexual symbol
⚦ (U+26A6): Male with stroke sign, used as a symbol for transgender.
⚨ (U+26A8): Vertical male with stroke sign. It means ‘other’ gender.
⚩ (U+26A9): Horizontal male with stroke sign. It also means ‘other’ gender.
⚪ (U+26AA): Medium white circle base, used as a symbol for asexuality, sexless or genderless
⚲ (U+26B2): Neuter. This is in fact the shape of the original (medieval) "Venus" symbol (depicting a hand mirror), the additional horizontal bar being of modern date.

Name: Anonymous 2015-05-16 11:24

social darwinism is also biological reality. But there is a human reality, where race is just a label to stereotype people.

Name: Anonymous 2015-05-16 11:38

Then why does the NBA almost exclusively consist of blacks? Why are all the running disciplines at the Olympics won by blacks? Is it because of "labels" or because blacks are biologically better adapted to running and playing basketball?

Name: Anonymous 2015-05-16 11:46

Name: Anonymous 2015-05-16 12:33

Yes, intense training and dedication, added to natural variance inside the race can allow some whites to match blacks' abilities. But that has no effect on the averages and does not make race any less of a reality. Race has impact on a lot more things than the color of the skin. For example, blacks also have, on average longer fingers than whites.

You people argue over such pointless things. It is the opinion of modern anthropology that race is a social construct. Do you, a bunch of shitposters, seriously think you know more about the topic than an anthropologist?

Name: Anonymous 2015-05-16 13:39

By the 1970s, it had become clear that (1) most human differences were cultural; (2) what was not cultural was principally polymorphic – that is to say, found in diverse groups of people at different frequencies; (3) what was not cultural or polymorphic was principally clinal – that is to say, gradually variable over geography; and (4) what was left – the component of human diversity that was not cultural, polymorphic, or clinal – was very small.

A consensus consequently developed among anthropologists and geneticists that race as the previous generation had known it – as largely discrete, geographically distinct, gene pools – did not exist.

The report The Color of Crime (2005, second expanded edition) by the New Century Foundation states that while the official crime statistics show large racial differences in the United States, there are several problems which tend to cause underestimation of the racial differences. One example being "Whites" sometimes including Hispanics. Another is not adjusting for that the different racial groups differ in population size. The report reviews the more accurate statistics that is available and describes many large differences in crime rates between races. The report also examines the research on possible bias against racial minorities in the justice system and the police and concludes that bias not a significant explanation for the different racial crime rates.[3]

It major findings were stated as:[3]

Blacks are seven times more likely than people of other races to commit murder, and eight times more likely to commit robbery.
When Blacks commit crimes of violence, they are nearly three times more likely than non-Blacks to use a gun, and more than twice as likely to use a knife.
Hispanics commit violent crimes at roughly three times the white rate, and Asians commit violent crimes at about one quarter the White rate.
The single best indicator of violent crime levels in an area is the percentage of the population that is Black and Hispanic.
Of the nearly 770,000 violent interracial crimes committed every year involving Blacks and Whites, Blacks commit 85 percent and Whites commit 15 percent.
Blacks commit more violent crime against whites than against blacks. Forty-five percent of their victims are white, 43 percent are Black, and 10 percent are Hispanic. When Whites commit violent crime, only three percent of their victims are Black.
Blacks are an estimated 39 times more likely to commit a violent crime against a White than vice versa, and 136 times more likely to commit robbery.
Blacks are 2.25 times more likely to commit officially-designated hate crimes against whites than vice versa.
Only 10 percent of youth gang members are white.
Hispanics are 19 times more likely than whites to be members of youth gangs. Blacks are 15 times more likely, and Asians are nine times more likely.
Between 1980 and 2003 the US incarceration rate more than tripled, from 139 to 482 per 100,000, and the number of prisoners increased from 320,000 to 1.39 million.
Blacks are seven times more likely to be in prison than Whites. Hispanics are three times more likely.

Name: Anonymous 2015-05-16 15:08

This one is by a white man, so I'll read it.

economic conditions explain the difference with white crime rates
This only means that blacks are more prone to being poor. Perhaps they choose a life of poverty in order to do crime all the time. Irrelevant to the question, at any rate.

when it comes to everyday threats to personal well-being, whites far and away lead the pack in all kinds of destructive behaviors: corporate pollution, consumer fraud, violations of health
Oh, so getting a diarrhea from polluted water or getting ripped off in a car deal are somehow worse threats than getting stabbed in the street or having your wife raped and performing an abortion as a result? This is just plain and misleading bullshit. Also, corporations and states are institutions, not people. They follow different decision-making procedures. Who's to say that the corporation polluting your town isn't black-owned? Then there are black factory workers and black soldiers killing people. By the way, black soldiers don't mean that blacks are more prone to kill people, but neither do white soldiers. It's a different process of making decisions and policies, a collective one rather than personal.

The next arguments from Tim Wise are self-contradictory:
meaning that whites were victimized by blacks less often than would have been expected by random chance, given the extent to which whites were available to be victimized
Because of ongoing racial isolation and de facto segregation, the two group’s members do not encounter one another at rates commensurate with their shares of the population
If there is racial isolation, then why are whites "more available" to be victimized? And vice versa, if whites are more widely available as victims, then what "racial isolation and de facto segregation" is he talking about? Bullshit.

the odds of a given white person (or white criminal for that matter) encountering a black person are only about three percent
More bullshit. With the modern diversity policies and "inclusion", blacks are everywhere, from offices to colleges to recreational spaces and all streets in all towns. The odds of meeting a black person simply cannot be as low as 3%, that would require all blacks to live in ghettoes and never leave them.

In 2002, blacks committed a little more than 1.2 million violent crimes, while whites committed a little more than three million violent crimes
So if there are about 8 times more whites than blacks, why do whites commit only 2.5 more violent crimes? You can't bullshit us, Tim Wise: blacks are far more prone to commit violent crimes.

Criminologists estimate that seventy percent of all crimes are committed by just seven percent of the offenders (12): a small bunch of repeat offenders who commit the vast majority of crimes. Since blacks committed roughly 1.2 million violent crimes in 2002, if seventy percent of these were committed by seven percent of the black offenders
This is more diversity bullshit. If 70% of crimes are committed by 7% of offenders, that doesn't mean those 7% are evenly distributed by race. As follows from the data, blacks are several times more wont to commit violent crimes. Thus, those 7% might have all been black, which would mean that the rate of repeated offenders within the black population would be higher. Tim Wise makes nothing to account this possible inaccuracy.

this means that whites are 4.7 times more likely to be victimized by another white person than by a black person
Which is less than the 8:1 population ratio, thus supporting the fact that blacks are more prone to committing violent crimes than whites.

If, as the Justice Department data suggests, blacks commit somewhere between 25-30 percent of violent crime in most years (23 percent in 2002), to profile blacks for crime will result in police being wrong, between 70-75 percent of the time
Another nonsensical outburst from Tim Wise. Profiling blacks means focusing more efforts on them, not ignoring crimes committed by other racial groups. And seeing that the relative crime rates are higher among blacks (yes, 25-30 percent is higher than the 10-15 percent of the population they make up), profiling them would be definitely rational.

The sad fact is that racism already enjoys plenty of legitimacy
Ah, but this is a joyous fact! It means that not everyone is fooled by liberal tolerance propaganda. A lot of people still have their own heads on their shoulders, which is encouraging.

For example, the backslash character "\" can often be a dangerous character to let through a gatekeeper, because it can be used to access different directories. Thus a gatekeeper might specifically prevent it from getting through. The backslash is represented in UTF-8 as the byte sequence <5C>. However, as a non-shortest form, backslash could also be represented as the byte sequence<C1 9C>. When a gatekeeper does not check for non-shortest form, this situation can lead to a severe security breach.

Name: Anonymous 2015-05-27 18:53

They're a real newspaper owned by Jews. Like all media in the West, as well as all of Hollywood. Enjoy your freedom and equal opportunity: Jews are the ones smothering everyone with oppression, but make it out like whites are somehow the worst culprits. And you can't say anything against Jews either, because then you'll be called an anti-semite and that is ANATHEMA (being an anti-white isn't looked at as something bad, and even being anti-black is nowhere near as abhorrent as an anti-semite. That is "equality", Western-style!)

What a fucking imbecile you are. If there was such a massive conspiracy, wouldn't they start by fucking removing the comments at the grauniad? Let me tell you something, you don't get to say stupid shit just because another person said something idiotic on the opinions section of a newspaper. Imagine if that was a constitutional right, everybody would be as retarded as you are.

Maybe you are just stupid or something, but The Guardian doesn't have much to do with Hollywood, so yeah, thanks for the useless bit from protect-yourself-from-fukushima-radiation loonyland. I also saved you the hassle and did a quick search on the owners of the guardian and in addition of having an agreement with Alan Rusbridgernot a jew so he can run things pretty much his way, I also found that neither GMO or its parent Scott Trust seem particularly jewish. And everyone knows the comment is free section on the grauniad is pretty whack at any rate.

Why would they left criticisms up if they are looking for a total jewish supremacy? It seems kind of silly to just leave them there to diminish the powerful anti-white indoctrination from an article written by a girl with orange hair by leaving the bashful criticism there for everyone to see. Don't be silly.

The whole stupid section is for opinions from people outside The Guardian at any rate. Why would you even assume people who read the opinions section would not want to read more opinions?
I hope this shit act is in jest.

What a shit article, there's shitton of jews in TV and cinema, but also immigrants and gay people because TV and cinema was deemed a degenerate artistic medium by white american christian males, in other words, straight white males deemed themselves too good to make movies whereas jews and irish people and italians and gay people embraced it fully and evolved it into the multi-millionaire industry it is now. Whoops, guess that was a mistake, huh? It's no secret to anyone, neither is it a conspiracy, and anyone who implies hollywood is the making of a jewish cabal is obviously and ignorant retard and his toxic opinions should be shot down. It's, well, free market.

a Times correspondent actually resigned because he was not allowed to report properly what was going on in Israel, or even to use accurate words to describe facts which were undisputed. He stated: "Murdoch's executives were so scared of irritating him that, when I pulled off a little scoop by tracking, interviewing and photographing the unit in the Israeli army which killed Mohammed al-Durrah, the 12-year-old boy whose death was captured on film and became the iconic image of the conflict, I was asked to file the piece 'without mentioning the dead kid'. After that conversation, I was left wordless, so I quit."

Enjoy your pro-Israel fascism and propaganda in the "free" media.

I'll let you bash Netanyahu all you want tho.

Name: Anonymous 2015-05-28 19:24

That's what I mean. The entirety of the American right-wing is pro-Israel, I'm not even going to contest that. Fox News is no Guardian, and I don't even particularly like Murdoch.
Calling Murdoch a secret jew is fringe as fuck, though.

Name: Anonymous 2015-05-28 19:48

Look into the adjacent thread, you'll see an Israely Jew name "Mordechai". Notice any similarity between "Murdoch" and "Mordechai"? Educate yourself:

But far simpler would be to make the simple conclusion that a person visiting the Museum of Jewish Heritage (proof: ) and saying

I have always believed in the future of Israel and the goals of the international Jewish community

is probably a Jew. Not to mention his widely known dislike of Muslims.

But I guess that making simple and obvious conclusions, and calling something that quacks and flies like a duck a "duck" is what you consider "fringe" nowadays.

Come the fuck on, you putrid imbecile. Did you forget where the fuck does Christianity, you know, the culturally dominant religion, even comes from? Yes, stupid, plenty of people have hebrew derivated names. Does that mean everyone named Sarah is a fucking jew because her name appeared on the old testament in hebrew? Fuck no. Get your head checked before jumping to retarded conclusions.

I have always believed in the future of Israel and the goals of the international Jewish community

So what? Go find anyone who is a congressman from the conservative party and they are probably going to say the exact same fucking thing. For someone who is pretty into this jewish shit, you are pretty behind on Israel-US commercial relationships. Maybe because you're a fucking retard.

Unicode is the epitome of bloat.

When exactly do all the possible languages and symbols and whatever the fuck else counts as "human communication" appear together in one document, except for Unicode test pages? It makes absolutely no sense to design systems that are basically optimised for this extreme edge-case.

OPs post shows up as all squares to me, I'm not affected.

Do emoji tripcodes work?

Name: Anonymous 2015-06-17 14:10

The underlying problem is that information is provided without any means to interpret and display it. That's why unicode and other standards are published, trying to sort out the mess.
We wouldn't have this problem if the information came with references to code that could make use of it.
Small details in some version of the unicode standard doesn't matter too much with that point of view, since the entire approach is bad.

Name: Anonymous 2015-06-17 14:15

Just give each encoding a unique number. Add to every encoding a special character that will act as an encoding sigil (turning the 4 following bytes into an encoding number). When serializing any text, preface it with the number of the encoding that is used at the start of it. Then deserealizing code can just choose the correct encoding and also apply relevant encodings to chunks of Chinese in the midst of Latin, etc.

Unicode doesn't even need to exist.

\c0x0204FFC1 These chars will be interpreted as 8-bit ASCII
\c 0x0402CDC1 these symbols will be interpreted as some 16-bit
Chinese encoding \c0x04B2BD41 these symbols will be interpreted
as an 8-bit Cyrillic encoding.

The only thing that's needed is to have a special \c reserved character in every encoding. That's it, no Unicode, no varying-width codepoints, no bullshit and bloat.

Sure is a good thing we saved all that space by unifying CJK so that software needs to know the context of the character to know which glyph to display! Now we can fill it with emoticons!

Why the fuck is emoji even in Unicode? It's for letters, ffs. Emojis aren't letters, what's wrong with just leaving it to the program to parse strings like :-)?

Even shit like superscript numbers shouldn't be part of it. You want fancy math, use Latex or some kind of markup. Can't send your brilliant formula over SMS? Well too fucking bad nigger.

How are we ever going to create self-contained systems and have separation of concerns if every faggot library/standard tries to endlessly expand and dominate everything?

You want emoji, go write a fucking emoji standard. Why fuck up Unicode with your shitty pet project?

Eh, fuck Unifaggotry. You hardly ever see anyone implement the full set anyhow. 90% of fonts don't even have non-English characters (and I mean really basic shit like French œ or German ß that's in the fucking ASCII table). Every time Unicode adds useless bullshit like this that no font author will bother implementing, it will be yet another "irrelevant segment" that everybody ignores, and it will add to the public perception that most of Unicode doesn't matter since nobody implements it and nobody uses it.

When you can't rely on fonts to have full implementation, software authors will only rely on a minimal Unicode set and just delegate things like emoji to their own implementation (ie. converting :-) to an inline image). This amounts to de facto alteration of the standard because a standard (or part of a standard) that nobody uses is just some fag's irrelevant fantasy.

The funniest thing is that Unicode did this to themselves. If they limited the proportion of frivolous codepoints, the community would tend to supporting the full set, because there is an initial psychological barrier between expecting that you will support a standard fully and making the leap to saying "fuck it, I'll just do the parts I need". Once you make that leap though, it's a smooth slippery slope that ends at "Unicode fonts" that barely support ASCII.

Unicode isn't so bad, it's just that the domain of text people think is simple and it's just not. When you look at the breadth of what unicode does/can do, it's really not that bad.

The mistake is in people thinking text is simple. It never has been, it's just in the past we had the luxury of mostly ignoring reality and using ASCII instead.

Name: Anonymous 2015-07-17 14:58

Let me guess, you believe that text is simple? That 7 bits are enough to encode all the characters that the world needs?

or so you would think.. nope, emoji is much more important. You can't copy these out the PDF and you can't generate them with javascript \u. but you can do both with emoji. Blackfacing your homo family smiley face that you send with the ipad is more important.

Name: Anonymous 2015-07-31 3:25

Emoji have been part of the standard a lot longer.

Nothing, it's just another way for those who can't work on actually useful things to justify getting paid. Autoemoticonification is one thing everyone can do without. Personally I hate the autoemoticonifying of text, everyone knows how to write the characters : and ) and read them too, that's the whole point of emoticons - they're constructed from regular characters. Emoticonifying sequences of characters by replacing them with pictures is just another level of unnecessary complexity and breaks up the text.

I am an antiautoemoticonificationist and I support the antiautoemoticonificationisation of textual communication.

Name: Anonymous 2015-08-02 23:27

C# identifiers can include Unicode escape sequences (\u1234 etc)
C# identifiers can include Unicode characters in the category “Other, formatting” (Cf) but these are ignored when comparing identifiers for equality
The Mongolian Vowel Separator (U+180E) has oscillated between the Cand Zs categories a couple of times

When discussing this, Vladimir Reshetnikov mentioned the Mongolian Vowel Separator (U+180E) which has had an interesting life. It was introduced in Unicode 3.0.0, when it was in the Cf category (“other, formatting”). Then in Unicode 4.0.0 it was moved into the Zs (separator, space) category. In Unicode 6.3.0 it was then moved back to the Cf category.

Fuck off weeaboo. In the real world, everybody from any country should be able to read, understand, modify, write, call and integrate code, which requires typing things in an alphabet known to every single programmer in the world. It happens to be latin because it's by far the most popular alphabet out of the simple, non-insane/autistic/retarded/hieroglyph alphabets.

The Unicode Consortium of today are a bunch of fad-chasing twatwaffles that still don't have widespread glyphs such as PETSCII or Klingon.

We need to bring back the classiness of the original Unicode geeks:

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-02 10:12

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-04 2:25

These characters are currently under ISO ballot for inclusion in ISO/IEC 10646:2016 (5th ed.) (see WG2 N4705 pages 130, 131, 135, and 137–138). Most of the 8,514 characters in this document will feed into Unicode version 10.0 in June 2017, but if national bodies have no objection to the emoji characters in the current CD ballot which closes 29 February 2016, then it is very likely that the Unicode Techinal Committee (UTC) will fast-track most or all of these 74 emoji into Unicode 9.0. None of these characters are particularly contentious or controversial, and I do not see any reason why they should not all be included in Unicode 9.0, but the final decision will not be made until the UTC meets in early May 2016.

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-04 2:27

I have the Unicode font created by Jing Yongshi 景永時 and modified by myself that is used for the Unicode and 10646 code charts (and which I use for the Tangut glyph images in my Tangut blog posts), but unfortunately I do not have any rights to the font, and cannot distribute it. I had hoped to create my own Unicode Tangut font in time for the release of Unicode 9.0 in June, but that seems increasingly unlikely given the current demands on my time.

Jing Yongshi needs to take the GNUpill tbh

This is one of the languages added to unicode:

Osage /ˈoʊseɪdʒ/[2] is a Siouan language spoken by the Osage people of Oklahoma. The last native speaker, Lucille Roubedeaux, died ca. 2005.[3]

In February 2014 a conference was held by the script's creator, Herman Mongrain Lookout, and the staff at the Osage Nation Language Department, along with UCS expert Michael Everson. They settled on a more detailed representation of the sounds in Osage and accounted for and documented changes in the Osage language. The result of the conference was a script reform; this included introduction of lower case, abolition of two ligatures, and the addition of at least one new character. The reformed alphabet is phonemic.[2]

The colour of an emoji is the colour of the font it's displayed with. Isn't that such a bloody obvious fact?

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-04 6:39

But then they would all be niggers. Pretty fucking gross.

The obvious fact is that emoji should be displayed by the program and parsed\sent in some format like :thumbsup" or :asianwhorecrying: or :pileofshit:. If there's enough room for this garbage, then why was CJK unified?

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-04 7:20

because CJK glyphs are relevant only to people speaking chinese
and emoticons are universal. CJK is also far larger and requires
more technical support than a static emoticon.

RFC 00009
The Trunicode \t64 Specification Draft v0.01a

It's just a text-embeddable 8x8 x 1-bit pixel bitmap, defined by a sequence of 8 8-bit characters row-wise, but since even 8-bit characters have fairly poor accessibility, we'll have to use a sequence of 16 4-bit characters. This isn't all bad as it allows for easier upgrade to \t144, the 12x12 x 1-bit trunicode version, defined by a sequence of 36 4-bit characters.

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-07 2:17

Imagine, now you can type in your own personalized style of handwriting!

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-07 2:25

And with the eventual rise of \t256, you can transfer whole 256-bit encryption keys in a single trunicode-256 character!!

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-07 8:25

So minutely different stylizations of any given character will have non-equal \t64 values. Cool story, bro.

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-07 11:22

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-08 1:04

readding a reddit link:

Korean uses a unique script called hangul. It is unique in that, although it is a syllabic script, the individual phonemes within a syllable are represented by individual shapes. The example shows how the word ‘ta-kuk-o’ is composed of 7 jamos, each expressing a single phoneme. The jamos are displayed as part of a two dimensional syllabic character.
It is possible to store hangul text as either jamos or syllabic characters in Unicode, although the latter is more common. Unicode enables both approaches.

so you can write a hangul word in many different ways that dont compare equal as strings? Cool...

New discovery

In some cases you may come across an ideograph that your font or your character set doesn’t support. Unicode provides a way of saying, “I can’t represent it, but it looks like this character.”
The approach requires you to add character U+303E immediately followed by a similar looking character. This is called an ideographic variation indicator. This at least gives the reader a chance to guess at the character that is missing.

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-08 2:17

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-08 2:21

This will be used exclusively to say »̀̀I can’t represent it, but it looks like shit.«́́

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-08 6:56

To a degree, yes. Changing one pixel affects one hex char, so you'd need to change 16 pixels to affect the whole \t64 sequence (ie 10/16 hex char similarity goes to 2^24 * (1 / 2^40) = 1 in 2^16 of randomly being not the same (or at least a similar) char)

Of course, the whole idea is that it is to be read by people, not so much by machines

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-08 7:42

Thinking of switching it to \t96 and \t144, 8x12 and 12x12

still seems a little small to support All types of written script though

10x16 / 16x16 kind of involves either switching from horizontal to vertical rendering (possibly good), or wrapping around / unrolling, and the hex codes are getting a little long.. any less than 16 chars per kB might be pushing it a bit too much

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-08 8:25

using the slash as an arbitrary delimiter and (opt-out // backslash?/ not required) intra-letter space symbol, maybe even a 5-bit extended Hex (q-z to replace 0-9, g-l for a-f, then capitalize?)

can swap the decimal \t spec for a simpler \t Hex/Extended Hex height multiple value, ie \t4 (ordinary hex height 4*4) and \tt (ext hex height 5*3)

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-08 9:33

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-08 10:56

Of course, the whole idea is that it is to be read by people, not so much by machines

Then pass proper readable 32-bit bitmaps, not this 1-bit tiny shit.

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-09 0:56

But nobody really needs to be able to write in 2^32 different colours, and if they do, they can use jpeg/png/etc

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-09 1:07

Maybe it could allow for a single 32 bit foreground colour selection... probably end up using a 24 bit RGB value though

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-09 3:19

32 bits isn't for some solid color, you niggers. It would be to support nice antialiasing, and whatever stylization you choose, if you're going to be transferring for-humans images as your "text".

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-09 4:46

I don't quite understand, stylization is already pretty much fully built-in.. Did you want 32 bit greyscales? I'm not very well versed in anti-aliasing

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-10 2:55

Antialiasing is just subpixel rendering, and depends greatly on the system it is on, and can't really be precomputed.

I therefore propose an addition of shaders for postprocessing to this encoding.

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-10 9:47

first sentence
Are alpha values any use?

Sounds complicated. Particularly as i read that as encoding the shaders themselves (they'll want to be pretty simple shader parameters or some such)

atm i'd estimate it'll only take a couple of days (once i get started) to knock up an android app that can translate/generate the current codes.. though a person could generate & translate by hand with a bit of grid paper if they were inclined =)

It's a letter because that combination of those two letters is more meaningful than either of them in isolation. By that same logic, soon in Unicode you will find codepoints for other common letter combinations, probably beginning with the most commonly used ones in English, such as ``the'' or ``as''. Soon after that, we'll be curious as to why only those few words are privileged enough to have their own Unicode codepoints, and the rest of the dictionary will soon follow. It won't take long after that for someone to repeat the process, and start putting combinations of words into the standard as codepoints. After we've put every single possible combination of words into the Unicode standard at this point, some people will start to wonder - do we really need all of those codepoints? I mean surely some sentences are never going to be used. After they begin pruning the standard of things never likely to be said, it's just a small jump to the last conclusion we will come to as a species - if we accept that some uses of language have more value than others, why do we tolerate the least valuable usage of all? The sentences that are hateful or oppressive are excised from the standard, and the ability to even digitally represent those thoughts in a univerally understood way is removed. Of course, such an act is certain to be of uncertain acceptance by others. It's for the greater good though, isn't it? The ability to express disagreement about the ability to express hatred is then also taken away, along with the ability to disagree about that, and so forth and so on. Eventually, a fixed point was reached, but by that point it was far too late. The standard had only one codepoint in it by then: U+1F4A9 PILE OF POO.

Name: Anonymous 2016-01-12 0:40

It's exactly as meaningful as having the arabic number "11" as a single codepoint.

Ok girls, I'm looking at and what is this. It starts reasonably enough, circled numbers 1-20, parenthesized numbers, letters, more letters, and then at U+24EA it suddenly turns into a complete shitshow. Like, someone is, like, fuck, we forgot a circled number zero, let's put it here, not with other circled numbers. And then someone else is, I need numbers in black circles... from 11 to 20. Fuck 1, fuck 2, and fuck 5 specifically. Then yet another person is, like, btw guys I'll put my fancy-double-circled numbers 1-10 here? I see we are running out of space so I'll make do without 11-20. And then suddenly the black circle guy is back with GUISE I NEED BLACK CIRCLED ZERO AFTER ALL.

Like, fuck, how do you even design this shit? Couldn't they figure that they need numbers from 0 to 20, then put all necessary varieties contiguously? I just can't imagine how it could happen evolutionary, like, is there a special committee dedicated to unicode circled numbers and people come there and ask for some shit, for real?

The Story of Unicode

A: we need more than 16 bits so that we can truly be universal, and include Chinese.

B: uh, but the Chinese already have 16-bit fixed width encodings that work well for them, that are both simpler and more compact than your Chinese proposals.

A: Racist!

B: OK, fine, whatever.

A: adds upside-down text, Jewish plusses, ellipses, smileys, original pictographs of animals, left-wing political iconography, cancer, and more!

B: ... Well at least I can sort of pretend that this swastika is the Nazi one.

It would be convenient if you could put the Content-Type of the HTML file right in the HTML file itself, using some kind of special tag. Of course this drove purists crazy... how can you read the HTML file until you know what encoding it's in?! Luckily, almost every encoding in common use does the same thing with characters between 32 and 127, so you can always get this far on the HTML page without starting to use funny letters:
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">

But that meta tag really has to be the very first thing in the <head> section because as soon as the web browser sees this tag it's going to stop parsing the page and start over after reinterpreting the whole page using the encoding you specified.

For this reason, smart people invented Unicode and UTF-8, and all you need to do is to say: From today on I will

write all texts in UTF-8
not accept any file which is not UTF-8 encoded.
will cancel all social relationships with people that supply alledgedly UTF-8 encoded files, when it turns out that the file starts with a so called "byte-order-mark" (BOM).
Let's make people that stick to 40 year old proprietary encodings a minority, and even giants like Microsoft will be forced to give up on their bad habits!

So, have they added a symbol for a graffiti penis yet? Yes, it's childish, but it also has comedic (or even religious/mythical) meaning in virtually any culture on this planet. When you draw a smiley on a wall, anyone can understand it. The same goes for a penis. Anyone looking at a penis on a wall understands it. It is a universal symbol for: comedy, religion, even society (for our modern societies: usually oppression by men). So how come there's no glyph for it, when it is such a universal piece of communication? I say boo to the unicode consortium for missing this obvious necessity.
And no, the hieroglyph for penis (U+130B8 -- 𓂸) is not enough because it has specific and not universal meaning.

Yep, the new kernel now joins the 21st century by adding color support.

I didn't upgrade my kernel, and I'm seeing them in color now, while they were all black before. I am however on a different internet connection now though.

Drew Raines, Software Developer: I adopted person with folded hands, type-6 as homage to the four pair in my home. This image embodies two beautiful things: transracial adoption and prayer. I grew up a white boy in the American south. My children are black Africans. Adoption has allowed me to incarnate into the black experience. I watch as they get disciplined before their white peers. I educate them how to talk to the police for fear they won’t come home one night when they’re teenagers. But I have hope in the God who adopted me, who promised to proclaim liberty to the captives and set at liberty those who are oppressed (Lk 4). While we wait for that day, he told us to pray. Hate is not someone else’s problem. It’s in me. Left to my own, I wouldn’t need any lessons on how to judge people or think I’m better than they are. A hater like I am cannot just talk to a perfect God with impunity. Jesus Christ incarnated into the human experience, bearing the punishment that I deserve for rejecting God and hating my neighbor, and defeated the domain of darkness whence all hate comes so that, in part, I could pray. It’s soil in which I plant my hope that his promise is true. So I do it. For my family, for my neighbor, for you.

There are even code points like U+FDFD (﷽) which are often rendered multiple columns wide. In fact, in my monospace font in my text editor, that character is rendered almost 12 columns wide. Yes, “almost”, subsequent characters get offset a tiny bit. I don’t know why.

Name: Anonymous 2017-01-15 17:15

I do have this list of scripts I mentally check against whenever I'm reasoning about Unicode:

Arabic or Hebrew for RTL and beginning/medial/end forms (arabic also has "isolated" forms)
Arabic for ligatureyness/glyph complexity
Some Indic script for ligatureyness/glyph complexity, and massive use of combining characters, including the double-ended virama combiner. Infinite length combining sequences.
Korean (Hangul) for the combining jamo system. Infinite length combining sequences (though these are never displayed beyond standard Korean syllable blocks, so it's less important)
Han scripts for variation selectors, halfwidth/fullwidth, and language disambiguation troubles. Also omg so many glyphs.
If dealing with displaying text, think of a Han script and Mongolian, which are written in different directions (vertical, sideways, etc)
Thai or other scripts from that peninsula (not counting Vietnamese scripts), because they don't use spaces to break words.
Emoji because despite the immense complexity of human language, Emoji still managed to get a bunch of special casing in various parts of the unicode spec. Infinite length combining sequences.
Latin for locale-dependent case operations (Turkish i, German ß)

Very nice article that shows clearly that the problem is Unicode itself.

There shouldn't be any of this. No code points, no grapheme clusters, no extended grapheme clusters, no combining of characters etc.

All that should exist is an array of different symbols. Each symbol should be on its own. So you want, for example, 'ό'? Different character from 'o', not 'o' combined with '.

Factors for Exclusion

1. Overly specific. Is the proposed character overly specific?
For example, 🍣 SUSHI represents sushi in general, although images frequently show a specific type, such as Maguro. Adding SABA, HAMACHI, SAKE, AMAEBI and others would be overly specific.

2. Open-ended. Is it just one of many, with no special reason to favor it over others of that type?

3. Already Representable. Can the concept be represented by another emoji or sequence?

Unicode! 🅤🅝🅘🅒🅞🅓🅔‽ 🇺‌🇳‌🇮‌🇨‌🇴‌🇩‌🇪! 😄 The very name strikes fear and awe into the hearts of programmers worldwide. We all know we ought to “support Unicode” in our software (whatever that means—like using wchar_t for all the strings, right?). But Unicode can be abstruse, and diving into the thousand-page Unicode Standard plus its dozens of supplementary annexes, reports, and notes can be more than a little intimidating
